Best Places to Work: QT Moves Up on Fortune List

For the seventh year in a row, Tulsa-based QuikTrip is selected by Fortune Magazine for its ?100 Best Companies to Work For? list.
This year QuikTrip moves up one spot from 28th to 27th.
“This has been the year of milestones for QuikTrip,” said Chet Cadieux, president and CEO for QuikTrip, “QuikTrip celebrated our 50th anniversary on Sept. 25 with a free music festival on the banks of the Arkansas River; QuikTrip opened our 500th store in Broken Arrow; QuikTrip announced we will expand our company into Tucson, Ariz.; and now Fortune Magazine’s announcement that QuikTrip for the seventh consecutive year has been named as one of the best employers is the highlight of a great year for QuikTrip.”
Although QuikTrip is the only Tulsa-based company on the list, three other Oklahoma-based companies and plenty of firms with a Tulsa presence were also cited.
Other Oklahoma-based firms include 13 – Devon Energy, Oklahoma City; 46 ? American Fidelity Assurance, Oklahoma City, and 73 ? Chesapeake Energy, Oklahoma City.
Online investment firm Scottrade, which has branch offices in Tulsa, was quick to note its second appearance on the list, ranked 60 this year and 58 for 2008.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized as one of America’s best places to work two years in a row and to be named among some of the other great employers on the list,” said Rodger Riney, Scottrade founder, president and CEO. “Our associates’ dedication to customer service has been the foundation of our success for nearly 30 years, and their passion for what we do has made Scottrade a great place to work.”
A driving factor for this year’s list is how the featured companies excel in creating jobs – 73 of the 100, including Scottrade, are hiring. In fact, Scottrade had the seventh highest rate of job growth among the companies on the list with 2,500 associates nationwide, a 24 percent increase from a year ago. Of the 100 companies on the list, six have never had layoffs, including QuikTrip and Scottrade.
“We plan to hire 400 to 500 associates across the country this year,” said Jane Wulf, Scottrade chief administrative officer. “We also strive to provide opportunities for our associates. In 2008, we promoted more than 650 associates, a 26 percent increase in promotions from 2007.”
A quick check of the list shows at least a dozen other firms with Tulsa presence cited on the list: 2 ? Edward Jones; 17 ? Principal Financial Group; 22 ? Whole Foods Market; 24 ? Starbucks; 39 ? Paychex; 51 ? Ernst & Young; 58 ? PricewaterhouseCoopers; 61 ? Deloitte; 78 ? Marriott International; 86 ? CH2M Hill, 90 ? FedEx and 94? Build-A-Bear.
The Fortune rankings are based on rigorous selection criteria, including an independently administered employee survey and extensive analysis of employment track records, benefit programs and corporate culture. Two-thirds of each company’s evaluation was based on the employee survey results, which evaluated trust in management, pride in work and the company, and camaraderie. The remainder of the evaluation was based on a cultural audit and human resources information.
