Boeing Wins NASA Contract

NASA announced Friday it has selected the Boeing Co. to help design and develop a heat shield for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle.

The contract has a 16-month performance period and maximum value of $14 million. Boeing was one of the companies to lose out to Lockheed Martin Corp. on the multibillion dollar contract to design, develop and build Orion, which NASA hopes will take astronauts back to the moon and maybe on to Mars.

Under the contract, Boeing will work on the shield that will protect the space ship from heat generated by flying about 25,000 miles per hour through the atmosphere.
