Devon to Drill Central Oklahoma

Devon Energy will spend about $250 million this year drilling 27 wells into the Woodford Shale formation in Canadian County.
The underground shale formation in central Oklahoma is 12,000 to 15,000 feet deep — nearly twice as deep as the formation is around the McAlester area, said Chip Minty, Devon Energy Corp. spokesman. The Woodford Shale in southeast Oklahoma set off a drilling boom several years ago as drilling companies flocked to the region. The Woodford Shale int he McAlester area is about 8,000 feet deep.
The Oklahoma City-based energy company plans to spend another $100 million to build a natural gas processing plant in what the company calls the Cana Field.
The plant, to be in operation by 2011, will be built with expansion in mind.
