Representatives of the Owasso Land Trust and Patriot Golf LLC have announced the pending construction of Oklahoma’s first Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed golf course. Construction on The Patriot at Stone Canyon, an 18-hole, 7,191-yard, par 72 course, is underway. The course will open in May 2009 and will cost $15-18 million to build.
“The Patriot at Stone Canyon is destined to become one of the great Courses in Oklahoma,” said Robert Trent Jones Jr. “The site gives golfers many gifts. From the rock outcroppings in the valleys and the running streams to the dramatic changes in elevation, there is a great variety of natural changing ambiance and drama.”
“It will be a wonderfully maintained golf course and a great experience for golfers.”
One of the world’s most renowned golf architects, Jones has designed more than 300 courses in this career, including projects in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Regionally, he has designed the Chenal Country Club, Little Rock; Blessings, Fayetteville; Crestview Country Club, Wichita; Deer Creek Golf Club, Overland Park; and the Highland Springs Country Club, Springfield.
“In terms of the natural landscape and scenic vistas, we knew we had something very special and other groups expressed interest in building a golf course at Stone Canyon,” said David Charney, president of Owasso Land Trust. “We decided to wait for the perfect opportunity and when Mr. Jones visited Stone Canyon and saw the topography, we knew instantly that he wanted to design the course.”
Headed by Bill Kubly, Landscapes Unlimited is building the course. Having constructed or renovated more than 700 courses, the company is the largest builder of golf facilities in the world.
This is an A-plus site, exceptional is so many ways and challenging in just as many,” said Kubly. “The extraordinary natural rock structure and ravines that set it apart also point to some of the tests we’ll have to surpass in order to build the course.”
Specializing in the golf industry, Rooney and Associates brought together the team of Robert Trent Jones Jr., Owasso Land Trust and Landscapes Unlimited, and will provide property management services for the facility.
“We have assembled what we believe to be the team in the world to uncover this epic canvas,” said Dan Rooney of Patriot Golf LLC. “The Patriot is destined to become one of the truly special golf venues in America.”
The course, which will stretch 30 miles and include limestone walls of up to 125 feet, will sit amidst the 3,000-acre Stone Canyon, Oklahoma’s largest master-planned community.
