Oklahoma Methodist Manor moves ahead with campus overhaul

Plans are in place for the new four- to five-story, 100-unit Crestwood at Oklahoma Methodist Manor, 4134 E. 31st St., to be constructed as part of the retirement community’s $55 million campus renovation and improvement plan.
The building was recently approved by the Tulsa Metro Area Planning Commission, and Director of Sales and Marketing Cari Owens said the group would move forward seeking financing when the property was 70 percent pre-leased. It is currently at 45 percent.
Along with the 100 housing units, the property will feature three restaurants, a convenience store, hobby zone, card room and classroom for hosting adult continuing education classes, among others. The building will also feature a member business center, meant to act as an alternative to having a home office in residents’ private dwellings.
Additionally, the Spann Wellness Center will include an indoor track, lap pool, hot tub, weight room, aerobics classrooms and massage parlor and salon.
Owens said she thinks the added amenities will allow the community to offer something for everyone.
“We’ve been here for 53 years, and we’ve kept up pretty well,” she said. “But this will allow us to provide a larger menu of options so that we will truly have something to suit everyone.”
The new building is part of a larger effort to make over the 53-year-old campus. Owens said renovations were recently completed on the 24 apartments that make up the Felt House.
“They hadn’t been touched since they were constructed 50 years ago,” she said. “We took them down to the bones and rebuilt them with world-class appointments.”
The medical unit will also be renovated to follow a “neighborhood” model of health care in which the different units, based on necessary intensity of care, are divided into stand-alone buildings resembling houses more than hospitals.
A new entrance to the community, complete with landscape walkways and pocket parks, will be added near the Crestwood building.
Owens said construction is set on a 12-16 month time line and Methodist Manor hopes to break ground this spring.
