Oklahoma National Guard Announces Armory Closures

Official from the Oklahoma National Guard yesterday announced that 63 armories and maintenance facilities will be closing and the units assigned to those facilities, re-stationed.

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission decision to close 58 armories and five maintenance facilities will take effect as seven new Armed Forces Reserve Centers are constructed around the state.

It was previously reported that over 100 maintenance facilities would close.

“The armories we vacate will be turned over to the deed holder which could be the city, county or the state,” Oklahoma National Guard Colonel Pat Scully said in a press release.

Norman, Muskogee, McAlester, Oklahoma City, Broken Arrow, Vance AFB in Enid, and Ft. Sill in Lawton will be the site of the new Armed Forces Reserve Centers. Construction is expected to begin in 2008 at Ft. Sill. The other six centers will begin construction between 2009 and 2011.

Construction on each center is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.
