Sand Springs Gives Bell’s a Hug

Bell’s Amusement Park President Robby Bell said Sand Springs could be the perfect fit for his Amusement park as he toured the STAR Center, the former site of the Hissom Memorial Center.
Sand Springs Area Chamber of Commerce President J.C. Kinder and City Manager Doug Enevoldsen guided the tour in hopes of convincing Bell to relocate his park to Sand Springs.
Evidently, Bell was impressed with what he saw.
“I think it has a lot of potential,” Bell said. “I was very pleased with what I saw.”
Enevoldsen claims Sand Springs could offer the venerable amusement park more than any other city.
“I think we can recreate Bell’s here in a more beautiful setting, with less congestion, room to grow, room for more facilities, and a safer environment,” Enevoldsen said.
Sand Springs has been one of several communities that has expressed interest in the park that Bell visited. Jenks, Owasso, Bixby, Broken Arrow, Vinita, and the city of Tulsa have all invited Bell’s to their communities.
Bell plans to meet with all of the inviting communities before he makes a decision on the park’s relocation.
“Sand Springs is so nice and hilly, and it has a lot of character,” he said. Bell said he was impressed with the number of community leaders who came to meet with him when he toured the city.
The size of the STAR Center was also a benefit.
“It’s plenty big — there’s plenty of room for us to do work,” he said. “If we did locate out there, we would be plenty interested in development of the entire property.”
Bell noted that the amusement park would not fill the entire complex.
A move to the STAR Center would eliminate the need for a curfew imposed by Tulsa County on the park’s most famous attraction.
The Zingo roller coaster is the only roller coaster in the nation with a curfew, he said. County authorities enforced a 9 p.m. deadline on the roller coaster, in order to keep noise complaints from neighbors down.
Bell estimates the park has lost $3 to $4 million in revenue because of the curfew restrictions on the coaster.
