A short circuit at the Sinclair Refinery caused a power failure at 1 p.m., said Michael Bellinger, refinery manager.
Power was restored in 45 minutes. Gases released by the failure, caused when a lightning arrester short circuited, were consumed in the flare. The large amount of smoke prompted calls to local media.
“We had a power problem in the plant,” Bellinger said. “It affected some compressors which caused some gas to be released for combustion in the flare.”
Machinery was re-started within an hour, Bellinger said.
