Tribe Buys Former Mall Site for Possible Casino

Using tribal economic development funds for 2006 and 2007, the Sac & Fox Governing Council recently approved a $1.3 million purchase of 18.3 acres of the former Tanger Outlet Mall in Stroud.
A vacant shopping center located along Interstate 44, that was partially destroyed in a 1999 tornado.
According to press reports, the tribe plans the conversion of the southeast portion of the former outlet site into a casino. The Sac and Fox Nation currently operates casinos at 42008 West Tech Road in Shawnee and another on tribal property near Stroud.
The city of Stroud bought the land in January through the Stroud Hospital Authority.
Other possible development options the tribe is considering include tribal buildings, a convention center and retail outlets.
Prior to development the property will have to go through a two-year process to be placed into trust status through the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs.
