Julie & Julia Author in Tulsa for Book Signing

BookSmart Tulsa and The Palace Café are sponsoring a book signing and fund raiser featuring Julie Powell, the author of Julie and Julia, on Monday, Dec. 7 at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, 1304 N. Kenosha Ave. in Tulsa.
At 5:30 p.m. there will be a VIP dinner and cooking demonstration by The Palace Café’s owner/chef James Shrader in the Food Bank’s Culinary Center. Shrader’s three-course menu will revolve around Julia Child’s famous Beef Bourguignon recipe. The cost is $100 and includes dinner with the author, wine, an autographed copy of Powell’s new book,Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession, and front row seats to her lecture.
At 7 p.m. the author is presenting a lecture and then will be available for book signing afterwards. The lecture and book signing are free and open to the public. Copies of both Powell books will be available for purchase in the lobby of the Food Bank. BookSmart Tulsa is asking guests to bring a non-perishable food donation to benefit the Food Bank.
“Since our inception earlier this year, our goal has been to make literary events relevant and accessible,” said Jeff Martin, founder of BookSmart Tulsa. “Over the past year, we had some amazing events. But none of that could happen without the support of the community. We wanted to do a great holiday event to say thanks. This event, and our partnership with the Food Bank, is a wonderful way to say goodbye to 2009 and get people excited for what is to come.”
The donation to the Food Bank comes at a time when the request for food assistance is up by 40 percent, according to Sara Waggoner, the executive director of the Food Bank.
“New USDA numbers show that Oklahoma is the fourth hungriest state in the nation and that one in five of our children are at risk of going to bed hungry. That’s one too many children.”
People interested in attending the VIP dinner can make reservations by calling Frances Bevel, the special events manager at the Food Bank, at (918) 585-2800, ext. 109. Proceeds of the dinner will benefit the Food Bank.
