KTHV-TV, Channel 11, which until this year has been thought of as the perennial No. 3 newscast in Little Rock, finished only 1 rating point behind 12-year market leader KATV-TV, Channel 7, according to advance numbers from Nielsen Media Research.
Results from Nielsen’s November ratings survey show the Little Rock CBS affiliate with an 11 rating and 23 share at 10 p.m. KATV, the ABC affiliate that has dominated the Little Rock ratings war for 12 years, registered a 12 rating and 23 share.
The ratings number is the percentage of the survey market watching the station. The share is the percentage of all sets that are tuned in to the station.
Susan Newkirk, KTHV general manager, called the survey a “nice Christmas present,” and said the work the Gannett Co.-owned station is doing is continuing to pay off.
Bob Steel, KATV news director, complimented KTHV’s performance but said the competition will only strengthen his station’s No. 1 position.
“I like a good fight, good competition,” he said. “You know, champs rise to the occasion.”
KARK-TV, Channel 4, meanwhile, fell to third place at 10 p.m., garnering an 8 and 17, sliding 2 share points since last November. It wasn’t the only third-place finish for the NBC affiliate. KARK posted a 7 and 13 at 6 p.m., behind KTHV’s 8 and 14 and KATV’s 17 and 30.
