Management at Burlington Industries Tries to Buy Plant

In an effort to save hundreds of jobs, upper level management at Burlington Industries at Monticello is trying to buy the plant, which is scheduled to close.

“Right now, we aren’t saying anything until something is decided,” said Roger Miller, Burlington Industries’ executive vice president of manufacturing in Monticello.

Miller wouldn’t comment further on the negotiations, but said he hoped a deal would be completed as soon as possible.

On Oct. 26, Burlington Industries Inc. of Greensboro, N.C., announced that it would shut down its rug manufacturing plant in Monticello, cutting 740 jobs. The plant tufted and dyed bath area rugs, braided rugs and woven rugs.

The plant, established in 1947, is the city’s largest employer.
